QA Technology, Inc., a leading company in the design, development and production of computer manufacturing equipment, hired AWM Engineering, Inc. to design a high-tech heating, ventilating and air conditioning system for their new corporate headquarters in Hampden, NH (approximately 110,000 square feet). Because of the extreme sensitivity of the equipment manufactured by QA Tech and the high cost of heating and cooling such a building, AWM designed a cutting-edge system to supply environmental air quality and control at the lowest possible operating energy cost.

To decrease the use of electricity during peak hours, AWM utilized a system which reduces the amount of forced air needed to cool the building. Ice is manufactured at off-peak hours, and during peak hours, water is pumped through tubes in ice storage tanks for cooling purposes. Then, the cooled water is pumped through the building. Radiant ceiling cooling panels, which have copper tubes containing cold water, are located above key areas and provide the main cooling. The panels cool the areas with a minimum use of forced cold air, thus cutting the amount of electricity consumed during peak hours. This is currently the single largest project for radiant cooling outside of Europe, where approximately 30% of new construction utilizes radiant cooling. AWM Engineering, Inc. adapted this European technology for U.S. application. The projected completion date of this project is May of 2001.

In addition to designing the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system, AWM also designed the plumbing and special fire protection systems for this building. AWM Engineering, Inc. specializes in Mechanical, Environmental and Electrical Engineering and Construction Management.
